The end of a romantic relationship is always the breaking of an ideal. Ultimately, this experience transcends gender, orientation, and personal preference.
Yet the ways we cope with the loss of the ideal depend on our social environments—on whether we are allowed to compare, justify, or reimagine what love should be.
How does our ideal of a partner or relationship transform after love ends? What influences that transformation, and does the ideal change at its core? Do we remain alike even when we choose different cultural identities or forms of intimacy?
And—should we even be constructing an ideal at all?
